MAC is an acronym for Media Access Control. This is a 32 bit hexadecimal identifying string that is unique to every network device. This address is used in networking for locating a device when it does not have an IP address. MAC addresses are not routeable, thus, MAC addresses are only useful on the subnet the device is on.
