Flash Back Up, or FBU, is a a technology used to protect cached data on a RAID controller. Specifically, if power is lost while disk writes are still in a RAID controller's memory, FBU provides sufficient power, generally via a capacitor bank, to keep the controller alive long enough to copy the contents of the cache to an on-board solid-state storage device. When power is restored to the system, the RAID controller will see this cached data, reload it into RAM and then finish writing it out to the storage array.

All of this is done transparently to the systems operating system.
