The CentOS project was a project designed to build a binary equivalent replacement for the commercial Red Hat Enterprise Linux distribution. The only changes the CentOS distribution is in changing branding and images.
Red Hat purchased the organization behind the CentOS project and subsequently ended the project, replacing it with CentOS Stream.
