ISO is an acronym for International Organization for Standardization. In computing, ISO is most often used to describe the ISO 9660 standard describing data storage on optical media like CD and DVD disks. In turn, the term "iso file" usually describes an archive designed to be written to an optical disk. Some operating systems, like Linux, allow for these archives to be "mounted" and their contents accessed read-only without first being written to a disk.
